[Solved] Heater Core removal?? 1975 270?

Unread post by diskman » Mon Oct 05, 2015 10:17 am

It's getting chilly out so I reconnected the dash heater core that the PO bypassed. Yep.. Leaks..\n\nHas anyone here removed their heater core in a '75 270? Any tips or pointers?\n\nThanks!

Got it figured out.. Remove the 6 sheet metal screws holding the front cover on... Remove both heater hoses. Unscrew the in/out fittings on the core. Slide the core out. Lots of room.\n\nYep.. Can easily see the leak. Now to find a reasonable rad shop to repair it this week.\n\nFront panel of heater box removed. 6 phillips screws along the edge..\nImage\n\nHeater core. Laying horizontal. Need to carefully unscrew the inlet elbows to remove the core.\nImage\n\nYep.. Found the leak. Off to the rad shop tomorrow at lunch.\nImage

$400 to recore. Nobody has brass cores in stock anymore. Guess the ol 270 will never have heat again. sigh.\n\nUPDATE! 11:30PM\n\nAlrighty. Total cost to fix? About 60 bux. Including hose clamps, elbows and new 5/8s heater hose.\n\nReplacement heater core. \n\nImage\n\nAutoZone (ugh) part number 399128. $37.99 \n7.75" long\n7.37" wide\n2" thick\nHas inlets on the side like original 270 core (sorta)\nHas a cheesy metal "frame" that needed to be carefully unsoldered with a small butane pencil torch.\n\nI had to slightly adjust the nearest holes on the original heater box a bit. My metal nibbler is at work and I was in a hurry so I butchered it with snips. Will clean up later if it works.\n\nSlid the new core in and attached the new 90degree hoses I made. I used 3/4 PEX elbows and some spring clamps I had. Cannot find metal 5/8 barbed 90deg elbows locally. I COULD have reused the original ones from the old heater core but whatevs. \n\nClick to view larger..\n\nImage\n\nI then installed it as the original one was. BUT, it's only HALF as long as the original one. I simply cut a 8"x20" chunk of 1/2" foil-faced foam. I cut out the area under the new core for air flow. Then I used aluminum tape on all the seams and edges. It looks wonky since there is a old piece of 2x2 under there for the dash. It works. \n\nImage\n\nImage\n\n\nResult?\n\nHEAT! Glorious heat. Of course its 55F here right now, but it really throws some serious hot air through the defrosters. Even the floor heat works. I am SURE that for my fall travels it will be MORE than enough. \n\nYes.. It's ugly.. \nYes.. It's HALF the size of the original..\nYes.. I will clean it up when I get time.. (sheetmetal finishing under foamboard)\n\nIt saved me $340! And I have HEAT!\n\nI will hang on to the original core and keep searching for a fix or replacement.
