383 Right Side Exhaust Manifold - The Same?

Unread post by Operation68Travco » Sun Sep 01, 2013 11:34 am

First off, great board! I was stunned to find it. These Travcos are dying off by the year, so it's good there's a community forming.\n\nAnyway, here's my issue: I have a 68 Travco with a 383 (440 would have the same manifold). Does anyone know if the exhaust manifold is the same as the one on passenger cars? \n\nI need to know, as my right side manifold is cracked, and is leaking exhaust into the cab as a result! (yep, dangerous!)\n\nAnyway, I'm looking on Ebay, and if a passenger car manifold fits, I'll do it. Headers, unfortunately, are not gonna fit.

AFAIK The Motorhome manifold is specific however there are a few sellers on Ebay selling the motorhome one. It is almost a guarantee that the right one will crack at some point. Not sure why but I believe it may be because of the heat riser. I bought an aftermarket one without it. As far as 383/440 interchangeability not sure on the exhaust manifold but the intakes are different. \nI would not use headers on the Motorhome 440. The exhaust manifold bolts are wet bolts and we all know what happens to header bolts...Not sure about 383 heads though. If you look in my 270 thread I put some pics of my RH manifold swap.

Make sure that looks like what you have. I am unfamiliar with the 68 270. Mine is a 75. I would think it's the same but double check.

My 77 model does not have heat risers on either manifold. I guess they have been changed at sometime in the past? Either way, probably for the best.
