Killer Retaining Pin
Just the words give me shivers. I'm about to purchase a 1976 270 with the 440 engine. I've seen this mentioned. How common is this failure?

I have no idea what you are even talking about.\nThere are tons of old 440's still on the road today with very high miles. I wouldn't sweat it.

Re: Killer Retaining Pin
hhhmmm. the only pins I can think of are for the timing gear and the roll pin at the bottom of the distributor and if either is trashed the engine wouldnt start simplifying your decision to by a non runner or not. AFAIK from my motorcycle days and having fixtures made to pin the rod bearings... Never heard of a 440 being pinned like that... Is some one telling you that to discourage you from buying it so they can snatch it?...I wanna' know what that killer pin is so I can go get one .... \nBBB

Re: Killer Retaining Pin
There is something called a Killer Dowel pin that needs to be replaced on older Cummins Diesel engines that are often swapped but I have also never heard of killer retaining pin on the 440. \n\nMake sure its a 440 in there.....\n\nRobC

Yep, I have heard of the Cummings dowel pin issue but that has nothing to do with the 440.
