Engine Removal from 270?

If engine removal is necessary on a 1971 270 (413-1), is it done through the front, bottom, or from the inside?\n I saw a pic with the lower front fascia and bumper removed that seemed to indicate that it would be removed from the front. Is this correct?\n\n If just the radiator needs to be removed, is removal of the front fascia also required?

I believe the front grill and hood access (one piece comes out with screws) radiator, one cross member under the radiator (bolted in) and the front bumper need to come off and then the engine will come out the front.

Comes out through front. You will need to pull radiator, etc along with front bumper and possibly front frame connector.

yep, out the front. Tigheter than a bull's Patoot durin fly season but it can be done. Keep your crane tight to the motor and I'd yank the intake.

Have any of you removed a 413 or 440 from the front of a 270, without removing the front frame cross member?\n As some have said, if the front frame cross member were removed, it would be real easy, but removing that cross member looks non trivial as the frame rails have a slight neck down just to the rear of that cross member, so even with rivets removed, not sure the cross member will slide out.\n While I was under the 270, I noticed that removal of the front axle and springs, as an assy, looks pretty easy (shackle bolts, front brake hoses, and one steering link). If this were removed, it appears that the engine could drop out the bottom pretty painlessly. Apparently some Winnebago dealers did it this way.\n Anyhow, I'd like to remove it the easiest way possible, so looking for advice from someone that has actually done it.

My 1976 Manual shows the motor coming out either the front or the bottom. \n\nBottom removal included unbolting the leafsprings and let the axle swing down and out of the way. \n\nEngine hoist out the front looks ALOT easier.\n\nRob

For mine, it looks like the engine would need to be stripped of water pump housing, intake, and heads prior to pulling out the front, as the vertical clearance to the top of the engine tunnel and similarly the horizontal clearance to the tunnel looks to be negative, without doing so. I did see a 318 powered 270 removal through the front, but it is not as wide as my 413, and it was tight.\n I could be wrong, but that is why I was asking if someone had actually done it (out the front), and how they did it.

My 413 came out the front without the oil pan and pickup attached.

Hiwaystar,\n What year is your 270? Also, did you have to remove the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, or valve covers, or anything else, other than the oil pan and pickup?\n Your first hand knowledge is greatly appreciated!

I just removed my 413-1 from my 270 last night. I did not have to remove the cross member. I didn't remove the water pump either. \n\nI did remove the power steering pump and the alternator. It was a tight squeeze but it made it.\n\nWe used a manifold plate bolted down in place of the carb and put the hook in the front hole. that way from the inside I could pushed down on the back and we were able to clear the cross member. the oil plug scraped a bit, but it made it through.
