413-1 Troublesome?

Unread post by Dodgy71 » Sat Aug 15, 2015 6:16 pm

My 1971 Travco 270 has a 413-1 engine. Do any of you know if this engine is either robust, or troublesome, in the MH application. If troublesome, what in particular gives the problems? Overheating seems to be talked about quite a bit, but not sure if this is a common problem with the 440-3 .\n In a similar vein, is the 440-3 troublesome, and if so, in what respect?

Either engine will of course run hotter under a big load like a motorhome pulling a tow vehicle, etc. My 440-3 runs anywhere from 190F to 230F depending on what's going on. It seems to stay around 210F when just traveling down a level road at a steady 60mph pulling a 2500lb trailer.\nI believe that these, what I refer to as big blocks, were actually pretty tough engines that can take lots of abuse. (I think the 413 may even be a bit stouter than the 440) When Chrysler got into financial trouble in the late 1970's they just quit making big blocks in order to concentrate on their smaller production line. Maybe others will have a different opinion.

I have owned a number of these and the only one that had consistent overheating problems was my fathers 1970 with a 318 and that was in traffic.\nI had a 73 with a 413. Ran great. expect to replace the passenger side exhaust manifold at some point if it hasn't been yet. They are notorious for breaking. Plenty of aftermarket ones on eBay for around1-150$. I have used two of them with no issues.

I have this engine, and I'm trying to find parts, JC Whitney doesn't seem to have any, and Mopar website is very hard to use.\n\nI have the radiator off (redipped and ready to be put back on)\nwhile it's off I'd like to change the timing chain and water pump (maybe unessesary? but I can't find one that matches where it bolts on)\n\nwhere do you go for these parts? I had it all tuned up and most of the stuff was easy to find ... would you believe the coil was original to the engine?!

I am bringing up my 71 413-1, also. Rebuilding the carb this week as it leaked everywhere when I put fuel to it (had been sitting for 30+ years). Even though it is a Holley (original), because it is a "governor" type, Holley had no parts for it. They referred me to Daytona Parts Company which specializes in "vintage" carb parts and rebuilding, who had a kit for my carb. Not sure if you needed to rebuild yours, but interested in what kit you may have used and where you got it. My carb is a 6189.\n I too will likely need a water pump and some radiator work, but have not yet started that as I want to see the engine run first. I think I saw that some were having luck with NAPA in getting parts like a water pump (but need to find an older counter person who still knows how to use a catalog). In addition to the helpful folks and information on this site, you might also try Classicwinnebagos.com (many use the same Dodge chassis as the Travco's), as they have some excellent parts references. Please let me know what you find with regards to the water pump, as I will no doubt need to get one also.

Your welcome. Get a copy of the Dodge MH Service manual and Dodge MH Parts book. Get the Dodge P/N from the parts book then cross-ref that to aftermarket P/N's.\nMost chassis stuff can be found via cross-ref or google search by just using the original Dodge P/N.
