413-1 Header ID headachs

Unread post by 72twodoor270 » Sat Jun 04, 2016 8:00 pm

I have recently pulled the 413 out of my 270 in order to check the timing marks in an attempt to eliminating a hard starting/timing issue I am having. As long as the engine is out I have cleaned up some wiring, wire wheeled every thing I can reach and will be apply primer and paint soon to the engine bay before I put the power plant back in.\n\nwhile its on the engine stand and I can get to the exhaust bolt easily I would like to put headers on it and wrap them before I squeeze the engine back in, but I am having trouble finding headers that will fit. (I am thinking I may buy some 440 headers and cut, adjust and re-weld to fit my 413 if needed.) \n\nQuestions:\nIf you are using headers, are you using shorty center dump style, long pipe style or some other combo type? \n\nDoes anyone know what type/brand will fit a 413-1\n\nIs anyone using an H,Y or cross over pipe just past the engine to equalize the back pressure?

I would avoid headers and try to source new exhaust manifolds.

413 set up is quite a bit different from the 440. I have headers and suggest sticking with manifolds.

Huh... two "stick with the manifolds"... I didn't expect that. I figured when possible switch over to headers, but if there is no real gain, why mess with what works.\n\nThe stock mans that are on it seem to be in good shape, but I suppose it would be a good time to at least replace the manifold gaskets with some copper ones. \n\nWhat about the square flange gasket to the exhaust pipe? Does anyone know what part number that is from Napa or for ordering off of amazon?

\nA muscle car is one thing but... Most people with gas coaches regret swapping over to headers because of the leaks and longevity issues.
