Just bought a '71 270 Mahal. What is this part for?
Hi. I'm just beginning a restoration. I'm starting with the engine an the brakes both need work. Can some one tell me what this part is for its not connected to anything and is just hanging out in the engine bay. My guess is something to do with a cruise control unit? I borrowed this image from a Travco restoration blog and circled the part I'm asking about in red. Thanks!\n\n\n\nhttp://imgur.com/a/F2MJ5

The linkage you have circles is the transmission downshift linkage. It is a necessary item and if not set correctly can damage your trans. It runs from the carb linkage a lever on the transmission.

Looks like someone hacked a universal Holley 600 carb on there.Like KB2 said, you will toast that tranny quick without that rod hooked up. Can you post better pics ? Hard to see. Get some good shots of the side of the carb where the linkage goes.

I also have a '71. That looks like the original carb. You can tell because it is a "governor" type. See box around the primary throttle shaft on drivers side. Only HD trucks had these.

This engine is a mess. I could really use some help sorting this one out it. The carb is a edelbrock something from the preformer series not sure exactly what model its hard to see the id plate. My linkage appears to be missing a piece which sucks. If someone has a picture of how this is supposed to go that would be awesome. I picked up the shop service manual but it didn't have a picture that I could find.\n\nGot a full tuneup kit minus plug wires 2 places didn't have them for the 413.\n\nhttps://imgur.com/a/ol0fF

Sorry, I did not notice that your first photo was not of your rig. The second pic makes it clear that your carb is not the original. Tomorrow, I'll take some pics of mine to give you an idea of how it should be hooked up.

They came with a Carter Thermoquad which the body is made of Composite. They were "ok" unless the body cracked and started spewing gas all over the hot engine.. \nAn Edelbrock Perfomer (A Carter AFB with their name on it)with a Chrysler linkage kit was the cheap way out for years but now with this ethanol crap gas the edelbrocks have a major problem with the gas boiling and causing serious vapor lock. I went with a Thermoquad specific replacement Holley but they are no longer made to my knowledge. Allstate Carb in NY had a few laying around and he rebuilt me one which worked better than the edelbrock but still had vapor lock issues. I finally swapped the intake to an aluminum one and that solved most of it.\nTry calling Allstate Carb. He knows these old Chrysler's and can probably hook you up with what you need.\n\nhttp://www.travcoforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=152

Re: Just bought a '71 270 Mahal. What is this part for?
Any luck with those pics @dodgy71? I really want to get a handle on what I need to find to dial this engine in, mechanicals are the first project then I can get started on the interior. Pulled the gas tank yesterday to get sandblasted. I may install a new fuel line I'm going to blow the original one out with compressed air and see how much rust comes out. \n\nSo the Edelbrock is working only marginally. I was going to rebuild it but now after reading the vapor lock problems with the edelbrock I think a new carb or a professionally rebuilt vintage one may be the best road forward and cheaper in the long run. Any recommendations for a replacement carb? If I absolutely need a aluminum manifold does someone have a part number or a link?\n\nThanks! Progress on this project is being made.
