1972 270 hydroboost conversion

Unread post by dirtydeno » Mon Mar 12, 2018 8:45 am

I instlled a hydroboost on the 270 yesterday. I used a hydro boost off of an 06 E450. I mounted the booster as low as i could on the original bracket so the resorvoir would clear the floor.\n

\nI had to add add some metal to the brake arm to move the plunger hole to a spot where it would get a full stroke and the lever throw was not to long. It took a few holes to get it right.\n

\nThe entire bracket then just bolts back up. I drilled a hole in the floor for adding brake fluid and cut the carpet in a flap so it is hidden. I then removed all of the hydro vac system. I just need to have 2 power steering lines built and connect my lines. I also need to install a proportioning valve.\n

I got all the new hydro boost lines made along with all new braided hoses and all new 1/4" tube. I used about 35 feet of brake tube. I used a chevy proportioning valve for disc/drum with a built in residual pressure valve. It turned out pretty nice. I still need to connect the wire from the old block to the new one. I have not yet driven it do to a gas tank issue but this weekend it should be on the road.\n

I just drove the travco for the first time. It brakes great. It stops very quickly and feels similar to e450s i drive at work. I can brake and turn at the same time and the stock pump does well. I did not drive it with the hydrovac brakes so i cannot really compare it to the before but i am very happy with it. Also it hasnt been driven since the 90s and it did great. Very well built rig.

\nThe master faces rearward opposite of a regular vehicle but the original also faced rearward. The pedal is still the same.

I made my first trip on the highway to my house, about 25 miles. Had a few engine issues like spark plug wire fell off but the brakes worked well, even with the rear brakes unadjusted it stops with light pedal effort. I am going to make a master cylinder shield to finish it after i take care of about 15 other travco projects.

I swapped my 72 font axle to a 76' front with disc brakes. I used the 76 hydroboost MC and will be connecting it soon. Do you have the part number for the chevy proportioning valve you used?
