Parking brake

Hi all, well we found our 270 it is a 1973 in great shape just needing some TLC and of course a Cummins! My question is about the parking brake adjustment. I have looked on this forum and other places on the web and have not found anything yet. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any info. would be helpful. Thanks Robb

I have not done it in awhile but it has two adjustments. It has fine one and a regular one(for lack of better terms).\nYou can tighten or loosen it a little from the handle itself by twisting the knob on it(if it's not frozen).\nThe other adjustment is done underneath at the drum on the back of the transmission. I forget but I think you have to take the drum off. I'll look at mine tomorrow and see if I can jog my memory if no one else chimes in.

Mine needs adjusting too... it's on my "to do" list that I haven't gotten to yet.

I chock the wheels anyway. That driveshaft brake IMHO is about as much of an emergency brake as a boot nailed to a stick called the emergency brake shoe.

I heard that some of these units did not have a park circuit in the trans. (possibly too heavy for the simple pin unit that is in these trannies) and found that to be true with ours. I will probably tear mine apart and make sure all is well. I tried some adjusting and it went from not holding to not moving Anyone know if parts are available? I work at a parts store, but some leads would be helpfull.

You can try NAPA just look under Med/heavy Duty but I seriously doubt it. You would probably have to have your shoes relined.\nI had a 1973 270. It has a park pin. your's must be broken. I think you can fix that without pulling the tranny if the standoff in the case isn't broken but I am not real familiar with Torqueflights. I believe they all had a Park Pawl/pin. Some motorhomes have Allisons which don't.

Mine has a park pin... I don't think that you really need it to hold as long as you get the parking brake fixed. I carry chock blocks too, you can get them in the "RV" section at Wal-mart pretty cheap.

Yea I have lots of wheel chocks in my RV gear but I still need to get the parking brake working. Will probably tear it apart this weekend and see what is up. Thanks Robb

You could put a microlock on it.

BTW crawked under mine. Looks like there is a jam nut on the cable at the backing plate that might be able to adjust it if the nut turns.
