Re: M500 Brake Drum Removal
My 76 had star when adjusters but everything was seized up after a couple years sitting. My brake guy had to seriously beat the **** of shoe flange to get them off inch by inch. My rig says 128,000 miles and he said the drums were well within tolerances. Shop manual probably has the tolerances in it. I will look tonight.\n\nRobC

Re: M500 Brake Drum Removal
What's most important is if the drum has become tapered. Run a drum mic on it. As long as it's not tapered or out of round o chewed up bad, it's probably fine.

In response to this thread, I updated my Bendix Twinplex Brake Systems web page to reflect the location of the Brake adjustment Wheels.\nhttp://dave78chieftain.com/TwinplexBrakes.html\n\nRefer to Figures 2 and 2a. I hope no one will be offended by my using a picture from here for that update. \n\nPlease note that most every picture on my web brake pages is clickable to bring up a larger size picture in a new window.\n\nDave

Re: M500 Brake Drum Removal
Can any of you verify that the rear axle bearing nut(s) are 2 7/8" OCTAGON nut? As best as I can measure it with my calipers, while still on the spindle inside the hub, it appears to be very slightly larger (2.885") while 2 7/8" = 2.875". Since OTC makes a 2-7/8" Octagonal socket (OTC-1933) I'm guessing that 2 7/8" is correct, but would like to get a confirmation of the nut size before ordering the socket. BTW, the next size OTC socket is 3" which sounds too big.

Re: M500 Brake Drum Removal
I have both 2 7/8 and a 3inch. Not much help am I. I can' remember but I think it was the 2 7/8. I think I bought the 3 by mistake but lately can' remember things well.

Re: M500 Brake Drum Removal
OK for my late 71 M375 chassis with Spicer 70 axle, the nut size is 2-7/8" and is an octagon. OTC brand socket is 1933.\nJust pulled my rear hub/drum \n As an aside, I note that the grease seal seems to have some sort of shroud that appears to be attached to the drum/hub. Never seen this before It would seem to complicate the seal installation. Any of you seen something like this and how did you install the seal?
