I will look for a pic of a 1971 brake backing plate or of the brake installation. The only holes visible in my 1976 are for the dual wheel cylinders as shown. I am presuming the "No-Star" backing plate brake adjustment is done thru the "rocking" in reverse where the cam action walks the brake shoes to a point of automatic adjusting as if the cam action were walking a "star" wheel about, making the adjustment... In my mind that is how the no-star braking adjustment is being made. Not a mechanic but this is just my presumption based on rear brake adjustments automaticaally working. else the necessity for manually removing the drum and manually adjusting the shoes and replacing the drum, repeating until satisified with the adjustment. And I dont believe this is a requirement Out of ideas at this end unless shown a clear picture of the star adjusters and their locations... Just my $.02 worth. \nHope I am helping out here, and not confusing the current issue .\nBBB

Just got done doing a quick search. Statement is that your brakes have "automatic"adjusters.\nHere is the short NFO... HTH\nBBB

I don't know what system you have there. It's interesting. It looks like the rubber plug is in the backing plate. The ones with star wheels are also self adjusting. The star wheels, in the ones that have them, are part of the self adjusting mechanism.

thanks guys...it really puzzled me, all the old 70's stuff i have worked on in the past had the star wheels.\nI'm able to rotate the drum now and i will try to get it off when it stops raining for a few hours. 8-)

Raining in Campbell River? That's surprising. Just like North Van it never rains here either. I'm glad to hear you've made some progress. Did you have the star wheel?

no...the small slot shows very little with a mirror and light... i see a metal rib of some sort but it won't move no matter what i do.\nI will take a picture of it tomorrow...if it stops raining long enough.\nwe moved here 2.5 years ago and it has been amazing weather...the last 3 weeks have been steady rain

success.\nwell...that's a lot of rust.\nadjusters seized solid. \nI resorted to a big puller and finally was able to get it off.\nthey had disconnected the rear brakes years ago ... well, that was an understatement. \nnow at least every neighbor for blocks won't come running out of the house due to the super loud squealing whenever i back this guy up. 8-) \nImage\nImage

Glad to hear that!\nThe shoes look pretty decent... Hopefully just rebuilding the wheel cylinders, cleaning everything up and some bleeding will take care of it.

yes, they do look good...going to turn my drums at work. \nanyone have the maximum tolerance for them?\nI'm going to replace the bearings and all the brake lines fittings and hardware while I'm in there.\n 8-)
