Steering box leaking

Unread post by Acesneights » Thu Jan 24, 2013 7:03 pm

Well the Steering box on my 270 is leaking badly around the top seal where the splined shaft connects to the column. I had to replace that seal on my 73. Luckily I still have the box the kit came in. BTW I cleaned off the box and the number on the side matches the box in my 72 220 and my 74 220 so I may just harvest a box from the 74.. It sure looks like the same box to me and that number seems to support it.

Well I decided not to swap the box. The only issue with it is the seal and going through all that work to swap a used box on which could very well fail as well is silly. The seal could not be ordered separately so I ordered a whole seal kit. Hopefully I can get a number off the seal for future reference.

Once you get the new seal, maybe take it to a "good" auto parts store so they can match it up to a part number for future reference.\nI just went through this with a 1953 Ford axle seal... I had to remove it so it could be matched to a modern part number.

Well got the kit. 44$ for the whole kit . If it looks right I'll post the part number. Hopefully I can identify the stub seal.

Well, NAPA's listings are all wrong. In fact the box shown in the kit and the replacement box on their website is not even close.\nI found the input shaft seal on ROCKAUTO's website. It looks right. it's for an M300 but as far as I can see the M500's use the same box.\nHopefully this link works but the part # was in Gates. 351310. The Pic looks right.\nAdvance was able to cross it. Will be here tomorrow am.\nhttp://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog ... ttype=7353

Are the seals problematic or purely a failure due to age?

I would say age. I have owned about 7 now and two (including this one) have failed. it's not a big deal to change it. It looks like the same box they used on the old chevy and dodge trucks. Nothing special about it.

Did the seal last night . Will post pics later and part#.\nWasnt bad but had to hnbolt steering column inside and lift out of the way. Did not have to diconnect wires.\nI used a small punch and tapped down on one side of the dust seal so the other side popped up then I used an awl and drove it into the seal and pried it out. Inised a deep socket the same diameter as the seal to tap it back in. The side of the seal with the spring goes inward .\nNo leaks.\nMake sure you clean the area good before dissasembly. Any dirt could cause problems.
