New 8R19.5 Tires!

Unread post by 77Travco » Sat Aug 01, 2015 8:17 pm

I recently ordered and just received a set of Samson 8R19.5 tires off the internet from a place called simpletire.com. They cost $118 each plus shipping... I paid $153 each to get them delivered to my door. The tires are all date coded the 13th week of 2015.\n\nMy current 225/70R19.5's kiss slightly at the bottoms when flexing so I wanted to go back to the skinnier and taller 8R19.5's. I busted out the tire tools and dismounted my spare for a side by side comparison in my driveway. I am surprised to see that the new 8R's are 2 1/2" taller than my bald 225/70's... maybe the taller gearing will help the gas mileage!\n\nI am also going to repaint my wheels so as to have the option of running without the hubcaps. Any color ideas anyone? I'm thinking silver or white or maybe baby blue with chrome lugnut caps.\n\nHere are a few pics...

I just got a Samson 8r19.5 from my local tires plus for a spare. $149 mounted. Date code is the 48th week of 2014. They look like good tires.

I wish I could have bought them locally. A truck tire shop here in town wants over $400 each for Bridgestones. I researched these tires and they seem to have a good reputation.\nI was going to mount them myself one at a time over a period of a few weeks but I am now thinking about taking the coach to a shop and having them all done at once. I was planning to use balance beads but if I have a shop do it, I will just let them do the balancing.

I was surprised as Tires Plus is owned by Bridgestone. Their own tire was $289 plus mount and balance. They could not balance it as their biggest adapter was just a hair too small.

I have 3 new Toyo 8R/19.5s that came on my rig with a couple really ratty Bridgestones on the inners in back and a blown out spare. One blew just sitting in the driveway!\n\nI am throwing down on Toyo's for the remaining 4 (plus spare) which are $300 each with install at Les Schwabb. They have a lock on the Toyo brand for $150 miles of the shop here in town.\n\n77, while My spare is off, I am wire-wheeling and painting my steel rims gloss white. Figure can't g wrong with white.

I am on the fence about painting my wheels gloss white or silver... or maybe light blue. :D I have some chrome lugnut covers on order as well.

Ok... since I am frugal and love to work on my own stuff, I decided to tackle this myself. :D \nI bought new brass valve stems, tire balancing beads, tire bead lube, chrome lug nut covers and silver paint. I busted out the jack and tire tools and did all work by human power.\nThe hardest part was removing the old tires from the wheels... I used two 30" and one 6' tire bars. Once removed, cleaning the wheels was a pretty good chore as well. I then sprayed them with "aluminum" color rustoleum.\nInstalling the new tires on the newly painted rims was actually pretty easy with the 30" tire bars. Then I hit a snag... no matter how much air I tried, I could not get the beads to seat on the rims. I loaded 3 tires at a time on my trailer and took them down to a local tire shop here in town. The tire guy there used a cheetah air canon to quickly seat the tires. The guy didn't even want to charge me so I gave him $20 as a tip.\nI have 15 or so pics that I will post below...

Notice the differences between the new 8R19.5 and the old 225/70R19.5 tires.
