House Batteries?

Unread post by 78Travco » Sat Jul 02, 2016 7:20 pm

Just bought my first RV. Its a '78 Travco 270 Elite :D . It did not come with any batteries. My question is, should there be one 12V battery or two, six volt batteries for the house electrical? It looks like it will accept two 12V batteries (one for the engine and one for the house electrical) but everything I have read so far says there should be two 6V batteries for the house? Does it matter?

My 1977 270 came with one 12 volt engine battery and two 6 volt house batteries that were wired in series to supply 12 volts to the house.\nI currently have only one 12 volt deep cycle battery in place of the two 6 volts batts. It works good for me, I can run the genset or plug into shore power when camping to charge the house battery. The engine alternator also charges both house and engine batteries through an isolator that is mounted on the passenger side of the engine bay.

When we got Nessie she had 2 starting batteries. One was for the Genset and the other was hooked to the house electrical and engine. I put two Trojan T105 6v batteries for house batteries under the step and ran a heavy gauge wire from the genset battery to the engine for starting. I am trying to find a good location for a separate engine start battery but other remodeling has been ahead of that. I also have to replace the isolation relays as they were disconnected due to failing.

Also - I have a 3rd 12 volt battery in the rear that is only for the genset. In a pinch, I could move it forward to start the engine if I had to.

Thanks for all the replies! I decided to go with one 12V for the house lights.

I got 2 12v under my step for house/engine. Then a third in the gen compt. One thing I don't like about this Travco is all it has is the one Sol control batt disconnect. I prefer having the Perko switch so if dry camping I can run off one battery.

I will be setting up a dhal solenoid set up to isolate the generator and house batteries while allowing them all to charge while Running but still able to shut them all Down when not in use. When I get it all set up I will share here.
