making a dongle to convert the ?50a 220? to 110 for testing

Unread postby Zed on Sat Aug 27, 2016 1:38 pm

So I am heading to Lowes to get a new 220 50a plug as one of the prongs on my OEM one is damaged. While I am there I want to get a 220 female and a 110 male and make a converter so I can start testing the electrical system off of a extension cord. I know this will not provide enough amps for anything like the fridge or AC to be tested but I just want to know what outlets work and it the fridge or AC will try to turn on or not. Is this possible, I don't have access to a 50a 220 plug where the RV is parked. How would I wire something like that, just leave one leg off the 220 connection?

You would want the hot from the 110 plug to be connected to both the hot prongs in the 220 female plug. Neutral to neutral and Ground to ground.

Your factory plug is a 30 amp. Just go to the RV section of walmart and get an extension shore cord and cut the female end off. Then wire it into your coach and you will have a new shore cord. While your in the RV section, buy a 30A to 20A adapter so that you can plug into a regular wall outlet. (I have operated my AC unit many times like this) You can also buy a 30A to 50A RV plug adapter so as to be able to plug in at a 50A site.
