Onan muffler and tailpipe missing

Unread post by FSJNut » Tue Feb 19, 2013 10:05 pm

Not really sure why they are gone. The prior owner said the owner before him had installed a different generator and hadn't finished the job. Not sure exactly what I need, since the old one isn't there to go by. I saw a CL ad for a '78 320 tonight and it had a pic of the generator (posted), and what I bet is the style of muffler and tailpipe I need to find.\nFrom an Onan parts manual it looks like the muffler may be 155-1258, which I can find on ebay.\nAnybody have any ideas on the strange tailpipe and bracket(s)?

On my 4000 CCK the tail pipe was just a piece of threaded Iron Pipe .

I would think you could fabricate that . Advance Auto sells some 1 1/2 ex pipe. IIRC the Muffler is big bucks.

If you really want to get fancy, you could even take it to a muffler shop and have them make an exhaust pipe for it.

One of the ebay sellers (PartsatCurtis) confirmed 155-1258 as the right number. Also said the tailpipe is obsolete.\nSo, I'm going to get the muffler from PartsatCurtis and have my terrific muffler shop build the tailpipe.

Newby questions:\n\nIt looks like the whole generator mount and assembly slides out. How do I do this? Is the "Control" latch on the front the one that allows movement or what?

Unless you have something I have never seen the Generator does not slide out on a 270. It has 4 bolts that hold it down and very very heavy. If you have the 5 or 6k genset it took 3 guys to lift mine. I was able to do the 4k myself with my skidsteer and alot of four letter words.

320's generator (on mine) does slide out. That picture posted is correct for a 320 model muffler set up, mine is still intact and looks exactly the same
