Travco 270 windshields falling out ???

Unread post by Acesneights » Sun Jul 05, 2015 12:27 pm

My windshields started falling out top center. I was able to pop them back in but they fell out again and I had to duct tape the crap out of them to get home. I have no idea why this is happening as the gaskets are in good condition and were replaced with the windshields. I'll post some pics later. I am not sure how I am going to fix this .

Aces: Mine looks exactly like yours. It is not popping out but really close. \n\nMy theory on mine is as follows:\n\nI took the AC unit off the front and noticed a pronounced belly on the roof due to the weight of the AC. It sagged at least an inch maybe an inch and a half. There is very little if any structural reinforcement at the roof above the seats. I think mine bellied down at the AC unit which caused it to warp/come up at the windshield. My solution is to jack the roof steel by the ac unit back up while pulling the lip down at the windshield. Possibly have to add a piece of steel to right behind the center gasket to hold the roof lip from going back up. \n\nThe belly at the roof/AC location is also causing leaks since it make a swimming pool around the vent.\n\nMeasure floor to ceiling in the center of the rig and measure again just forward of the front AC unit.

That is a good idea. I did not even think of that and now that you say it, I think you are right. I'm gonna look at mine.

I looked at mine again this afternoon.\n\nI assume your ceiling is in place so you can't get to the steal stringers. The third place to measure would be right behind the cockpit bulkhead basically over the tranny. I think this is the farthest forward steel stringer steel. \n\nI can't jack mine yet as the windshield is still in and I have not summoned the stones to pull them out and replace the gasket. It like a you-know-what so I need to do it before the winter.\n\nRob

Ok well I did try it and it made it worse. It lifted the opening which by the way would make installation easier. I found my problem. I will post some pics but basically whoever replaced these windshields did a hack job and used the wrong gasket. The factory Travco gasket is 1/4 inch wider.

Yes looks like a bad job !! also saw that the center gasket was cut to short leaving you with a big gap to fill !! & weak link for windshields to push out . I spoke to Mike at Fortravel he told me that the original weather strip moulds where lost in a fire (not replaced ) but the new ones will work with some shaving happening to the opening lip the gasket goes onto. If you can share any info on the sealer used when they are reinstalled , product & how - where was it applied ?

You can see in the last pic that the caliper is set to the gasket currently installed vs the Foretravel gasket I'm holding. The Foretravel gasket is 1/4' wider. I just hope it will make the radius bends. That trim lok stuff I used on the side windows was spec'd to make the radius but they didn't. The corners look like crap.
