What grade gas do you use ?

Unread post by Acesneights » Fri May 10, 2013 8:27 am

With the decline of gas quality and the ethanol blend which is proving to be detrimental to carbureted engines , what are you running ? Mine was pinging and the genset running excessively hot. The 440 was dieseling.\nI filled it up with 94 and the pinging is gone as well as the afterrun. The generator exhaust to me still runs hot but it no longer glows. \nWhat are you guys running ?\nAny additives ?

I run regular 87 grade. If you are pinging your timing is too far advanced. Easy adjustment. The ethanol blended fuels (up to 10%) shouldn't be a problem for a newer carb, or one that has been rebuilt recently as the gaskets and soft components are now tolerant of small amounts of ethanol. I rebuilt my holley about a year ago abd have had no issues. The Dodge 440-3 is a low compression engine and anything higher than 87 is just more expensive, no real gains to be had without internal engine mods to raise the compression. If you are having run on or dieseling after shut down it can be caused by carbon deposits and too high of an idle setting. Name barand gasoline such as Chevron or Shell have additives to clean these deposits out, which is why they cost a little more.

Hopefully I have a timing light that works. Do you have any issues with the generator on 87 ?\nThe guy from Summit was saying that the ethanol adds to the heat soak ?\nI'm more of a diesel guy....:)

The lowest octane around here is 87 and that's what I run. I have never had an issue with pinging and my Onan generator seems to run just fine on it.
