Onan 6.0K NH genset

Unread post by KB2CRK » Mon Dec 01, 2014 11:23 am

I was looking at my genset today and found I do not have a cck. I have a NH series Onan and I figured I would share the manual I found for it.

Yeah Thanks KB2. Looks like the one in the manual has points. Does anyone know if these came with electronic ignition. Mine is a '76.\n\nI have been actively avoiding my genny project but must jump on it soon to be ready for spring.\n\nRobC

From what I have seen in the manual this genset matches mine. I also have a 76.

\n\nThere used to be a conversion kit from Onan but it is obsolete. There is quite a bit of info on Onans over at smokstak.\nhttp://www.smokstak.com/

Just got the old girl running today. Installed the new control board I purchased back in January, pulled and cleaned the carb and it fired right up. I had to make a few adjustments and wire up an inside start stop switch but nothing major. Was putting out 150 volts when first started but got it back down to 120 both unloaded and under load.

Also discovered that I do not have a switch to go from shore power to genny power. I have a 50 amp receptacle in the power cord compartment that is hooked to the generator. I just plug my cord into it. I was wondering what it was there for.

Mine has a 30 amp plug there. In some ways, I actually prefer this older (simpler) setup.

when I got my unit and got the genset running, I had no power inside the unit... Finally figured this system out...\nThe internal cable gets plugged into the internal socket in the rv... This connectcs the genset to the internal wiring of the rv. No switches are thrown. If wanting to use shore power, disconnect the plug, pull out as much as needed and plug into campgrround post or an extension cord from your house...this is how my 1974 unit functions.. I was going round and round throwing breakers etc. trying to finger it out... Now I know...FWIW...

I spent about 20 minutes tracing out the route of the cable from the genset. The second I saw the plug (I had forgotten it was there) The bells rang.... I was looking for a switch and found a much simpler system.
