Engine is bucking under load

Unread post by Acesneights » Mon Aug 22, 2016 8:29 pm

Went away last weekend and was towing my ATVs and noticed from time to time the Travco would buck like a pop back or something. Not sure what's going on. I'm better with diesels than gassers. Not sure if it's getting vapor lock, the fuel filter is bad(not very old but I have noticed rust in them) or something wrong with the carb or maybe the Electronic ign box going bad ?\nI hate intermittent problems.

Intermittent is a bitch. Only difference between gasser an diesel is the ignition system. Hate to say it but an intermittent pop back could be any of the things you mentioned.

If the engine starts to run out of gas, it will fade off, not cut out and in sharply. I would start with the cap and rotor and check all connections while you're in there.

Well,\nI changed the coil, cap, rotor, wires and plugs.\nFuel filters(3) and I put in a HP Mech Carter Fuel pump. Seems to be ok now. The only thing I saw that looked bad was a few of the spark plug wires were questionable. Funny, I had trouble with Accel years ago...You think I would have learned from that. I changed over to MSD 8mm wires.\nThe generator was running weird too...I am beginning to think I got a bad load of gas up in NH.

Well, took her to Gilbert Pa a few weeks ago for a military truck show towing a 6x12 trailer then we hit the Diesel nationals in Englishtown on the way back and she ran great.\nJust went up to NH this weekend and did about 450 miles towing a 16 ft equipment trailer with tools and 3 atvs and she ran great the whole way. I got about 7 mpg heading up and 6 coming home. Not horrible considering I was probably close to 19,000lbs with trailer in tow.
