Edelbrock Performer vs Thermoquad...

Unread post by Acesneights » Wed Apr 24, 2013 7:32 am

My carb has a flat spot. You have to accelerate slowly or it stalls. It still has a thermoquad.\nSummit has reman thermo quads for 280$ but from what i have read they were not a great carb and had some sort of fire isssue ?\nI can buy a brand new Edelbrock carb(afb knockoff) for about the same price...\nOpinions ?

My carb has a flat spot that I usually just power through with a heavy foot. If I ever do replace it, I will go with a reman TQ from Summit.

A carb that has a flat spot is a carb with a bad accelerator pump. Edelbrock is the best. These carbs are easy to fix. Frank

Well, the flat spot has gotten worse. it is hard to drive it. I ordered a 1406 600 cfm Edelbrock Performer from Summit. I was almost considering a 750 since I think the Thermoquad is an 800 but Summits CFM calculator came up with about 561 necessary CFM so I stayed with the 600. weird though it seems you can no longer order a Chrysler specific carb. I ordered a universal and hopefully the mopar linkage kit I ordered with it will work.

I think you will like the 1406. I have one on a Jeep 401 and it works great. Very easy to tune with the calibration kit, but will probably work great right out of the box. I think you will need an adapter, like the Edelbrock 2696. The 1406 is a square bore, and I think the Thermoquad is a spread bore.

Yep got a mr gasket adapter plate.\nSo they dont make brand specif carbs anymore ?\nJust buy the 1406 then the appropriate linkage adapter ?\nThat was the part I was unsure about.\nI really cant wait to scrap the 440 for a 6bt. \nStarting the savings acct for the conversion now....:)

Ugghhhh...\nSo th drama unfolds. I have dealt with Summit racing for years and never once had a bad experience...Till now.\nThe new carb came in two days with regular ground shipping. I open the box and the carb has writing on the top with a magic marker. Can't tell what it said but that is an instant red flag. So parts bag etc looks un opended so I install it. It runs like crap and stalls and as soon as it stalled it was flooding the motor with gas from the residual fuel pressure. I call Summit PO'ed. The tech gets on the phone and says the floats need to b adjusted...\nWhat..a brand new carb and I have to take it apart ? I have bought atleast 4 brand new carbs in the past 8 yrs and never had to do anything but install it and fine tune.\nSo I took it apart. The floats were way off. I adjusted them.It seems to run pretty good now but when I shut it off and it sits there is a nasty smell of gasoline throughout the camper. I inspect the entire fuel system. No leaks anywhere. Smells like it's coming from the carb itself.\nThis is gonna sound nuts but the intake manifold is a cast iron spreadbore. The thermopuke that was on it had a very thick base gasket. I assume that was to insulate the carb from the heat of the cast iron manifold. I had to use an adaptor plate for the Edelbrock as it is square bore. it came with two thin paper gaskets. One for adapter to manifold and one for adapter to carb. I did not reuse the thermopuke gasket as it was damaged. I figured the aluminum adapter is almost an inch thick and should be enough heat isolation but I swear the heat from the ngine after it's shut off is vaporizing the gas in the carb and causing the smell...\nOpinions ?\nOn a side note I question was the Thermoquad was bad? It had a major flat spot but when I went to take it off the 4 bolts were loose. I mean loose. I can't believe it ran at all.\nI don't like gassers. I can't wait to put this 440 where it belongs...Anchoring a boat....\nMust divert funds for Cummins swap...

That writing had to mean something. I'll bet this thing was a return.

Guess I was wrong about you being happy with the 1406. ;) Does sound like a return. I've never had a problem with Summit either. It's easy enough to try the 1/4" carb isolator. May keep the fuel from boiling.\nDoes your engine have the heat riser on the passenger side exhaust manifold? If it does, make sure it is opening all the way when the engine is hot. If it isn't it will get the intake too hot and contribute to fuel boil.

First ...i need to buy a lottery ticket because DMV opens at 8 am and today for some reason they opened at 7:30. Even the guard was shocked.....this has never happended in the history of ct dmv.\nOk got here with the Travco. Shut it off. Stunk of gas a few mins later and was hard to start like was flooded.\nI think gas is dribbling in after its shut off but i do have a valve on the pass side exhaust manifold which appears to be leaking from a poor attempt at squashing over the polution tube( they had those in 1975??? On a camper no less ?)\nSo pulling that may be in order. I know the pass side ones always crack on the 440's but dont see any evidence of that. \nI can tell you I think this carb is junk. Also when you come to a stop the thin is racing a little and a gentle tap on the gas cures it. As far as I can see all throttle linkage is operating fine and not binding.\nA bit of good news. Inhad hooked up the cruise control rod...cruise works !!!\nSummit is getting an earful later...
